# Kiersten Lillis ## Posts - [Craft Resource: Romance Your Brand by Zoe York](https://kierstenlillis.com/craft-resource-romance-your-brand-by-zoe-york/): I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about what I want my writing career to look like long-term. - [Blog Schedule Change](https://kierstenlillis.com/blog-schedule-change/): I interrupt this regularly scheduled blog to bring you this update. - [Book Recommendation: Kingdom of Fire Trilogy by Jessica Cluess](https://kierstenlillis.com/kingdom-of-fire-trilogy/): This month's book recommendation is another trilogy...surprise, surprise. - [Research Files: Anubis, Egyptian God of the Dead](https://kierstenlillis.com/research-files-anubis-egyptian-god-of-the-dead/): Anubis, also called Anpu, was the ancient Egyptian god of the dead...Rather than ruling the dead as Lord, Anubis was a protector and caretaker. - [Writing Craft Resource: First Draft with Sarah Enni Podcast](https://kierstenlillis.com/writing-craft-resource-first-draft-with-sarah-enni-podcast/): This month's resource is First Draft with Sarah Enni, an interview-style podcast about writing and publishing. This post is going to be short and sweet. - [Research Files: Muses of Greek Mythology](https://kierstenlillis.com/research-files-muses-of-greek-mythology/): The Muses of Greek mythology were a group of goddesses that inspired scientists, painters, poets, musicians, and a plethora of other creative types. - [Book Recommendation: Strange the Dreamer Duology by Laini Taylor](https://kierstenlillis.com/strange-the-dreamer-by-laini-taylor/): This month’s book review is yet another duology, so lucky you, you get two for the time of one! Today is all about Laini Taylor’s strange and beautiful world in Strange the Dreamer and its follow-up Muse of Nightmares. - [Research Files: Eye of Horus](https://kierstenlillis.com/research-files-eye-of-horus/): The Eye of Horus is a symbol of protection, sacrifice, good health, and royal power. Because of this, many Ancient Egyptians and Middle Easterners wore the symbol as an amulet or painted it on their ships or outside their homes to ward off evil and sickness. - [Writing Craft Resource: Writing with Color Tumblr](https://kierstenlillis.com/writing-craft-resource-writing-with-color-tumblr/): This month’s featured resource is the Writing with Color Tumblr website. - [Nine Worlds of Old Norse Mythology](https://kierstenlillis.com/nine-worlds-of-old-norse-mythology/): Old Norse mythology divided the universe into nine separate worlds. At least, based on the limited information available, that’s what present day scholars conclude. - [Book Recommendation: Everless Duology by Sara Holland](https://kierstenlillis.com/book-recommendation-everless-duology/): This month’s book recommendation is another double, which isn't a surprise in the fantasy genre. - [Brísingamen, Freya's Necklace](https://kierstenlillis.com/brisingamen-freyas-necklace/): Brísingamen is a necklace belonging to the goddess Freya (sometimes spelled Freyja). Scholars don’t know many details about the Brísingamen, but artists often depict the goddess wearing a large necklace. - [Research Files: Seidr, Magic of Destiny](https://kierstenlillis.com/research-files-seidr-magic-of-destiny/): Seidr is a form of magic practiced in pre-Christian Norse mythology. - [Writing Craft Resource: The Creative Penn Podcast](https://kierstenlillis.com/writing-craft-resource-the-creative-penn-podcast/): I don’t remember the exact moment I first discovered Joanna Penn of The Creative Penn. - [Research Files: Norns, Authors of Destiny](https://kierstenlillis.com/research-files-norns-authors-of-destiny/): In Norse mythology, the norns (with a lowercase ‘n’) visit a person at their birth to determine their future. They weave the newborn’s thread of life based on lifespan and the good and bad events to befall them. - [Book Recommendation: Ink & Bone by Rachel Caine](https://kierstenlillis.com/book-recommendation-ink-bone/): This month’s book recommendation is Ink & Bone, the first installment of Rachel Caine’s The Great Library series. - [Research Files: Kitsune, the Trickster Fox](https://kierstenlillis.com/research-files-kitsune-the-trickster-fox/): Since today is April Fool’s Day in the United States of America, I decided it would be fun—even if a little on the nose—to focus on a figure often associated with trickster tendencies or deception: the Japanese kitsune. - [Writing Craft Resource: Secrets of Story Structure](https://kierstenlillis.com/writing-craft-resource-secrets-of-story-structure/): Every month I share a writing craft resource I use. This month, it's K.M. Weiland's blog post series called The Secrets of Story Structure. - [Research Files: Yggdrasil the World-Tree](https://kierstenlillis.com/research-files-yggdrasil-the-world-tree/): Yggdrasil is a frequently-used name to describe the world-tree in Old Norse mythology. Scholars can’t seem to agree on much about the tree, from its species (generally considered to be Ash, but not always),to the tree’s name’s origin and meaning, to how the Nine Worlds are supposedly arranged around the great tree. Even the Nine Worlds themselves are up for debate, but one thing that seems commonly accepted is that Yggdrasil is a powerful source that holds all of the worlds together at the center of the universe. - [Book Recommendation: Firebird Trilogy by Claudia Gray](https://kierstenlillis.com/book-recommendation-firebird-trilogy/): If you tuned into the blog last week, you may remember my post about the myth of the Teumessian Fox and the rather lengthy--and loosely related--musing on paradoxes. - [Research Files: The Teumessian Fox and Paradoxes](https://kierstenlillis.com/research-files-the-teumessian-fox-and-paradoxes/): The legend of the Teumessian Fox and Laelaps the dog is a Greek myth from the time when Creon was regent of Thebes. Displeased with the people of Thebes, a god sent the massive fox to punish the city. Sometimes this act is attributed to Dionysus. The fox wreaked havoc on the city, devouring people in its path. The worst part for the people of Thebes, though, was that the Teumessian Fox was destined to evade its hunter, so despite their best efforts, the fox could be neither captured nor killed. - [Writing Craft Resource: The Emotion Thesaurus](https://kierstenlillis.com/writing-craft-resource-the-emotion-thesaurus/): Writing advice often includes the old adage, “show, don’t tell,” without any concrete instructions about how to actually do that. - [Research Files: The Gorgons](https://kierstenlillis.com/research-files-the-gorgons/): Today, we understand the Gorgons as three ugly monsters in Greek mythology who had hair made of snakes. Two of the sisters, Euryale and Stheno, were immortal, while the most well-known Gorgon, Medusa, was not immortal. Perseus killed Medusa by cutting off her head, and her power was so great, that even after her death, anyone who looked in Medusa’s eyes turned to stone. - [Book Recommendation: A Song Below Water by Bethany C. Morrow](https://kierstenlillis.com/book-recommendation-a-song-below-water/): My book recommendation this month is A Song Below Water by Bethany C. Morrow. I loved, loved, loved this book. - [Research Files: The River Lethe](https://kierstenlillis.com/research-files-the-river-lethe/): In Greek mythology, River Lethe was one of the five rivers that flowed through the Underworld. Some Greeks believe that after death, a person would drink from the river in order to forget their past life and clear their soul for rebirth/reincarnation to a new life. The river was often associated with the Greek spirit of forgetfulness and oblivion, also named Lethe. - [Craft Resource: Susan Dennard's Website](https://kierstenlillis.com/craft-resource-susan-dennards-website/): My fourth post of each month is going to be reserved for craft discussions and craft resources that I personally use and love. - [Research Files: Mnemosyne and Memory](https://kierstenlillis.com/research-files-mnemosyne-and-memory/): Mnemosyne is the Greek goddess of memory and sometimes denoted a Titaness...She was also the namesake of a river that flowed through the Underworld, parallel to Lethe, the river of forgetfulness. Those who drank from the river of Mnemosyne would not forget their past lives or be reincarnated. Instead, they would spend eternity with their heroes. - [Book Recommendation: Aru Shah Series by Roshani Chokshi](https://kierstenlillis.com/book-recommendation-aru-shah-by-roshani-chokshi/): My book recommendation this month is actually two books (it’s the first month of this series and you’re already getting a bonus!), the first two in the Pandava Quartet by Roshani Chokshi: Aru Shah and the End of the World and Aru Shah and the Song of Death. - [Research Files: Golem Mythology](https://kierstenlillis.com/golem-mythology/): Not to be confused with Gollum, the character from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, a golem is a human-inspired form made from clay or earth and then brought to life through one of a few different methods, usually involving a secret name of God, inscription or recitation of a specific word or words (often the Hebrew word for “truth”), and/or a ritualistic physical movement like walking around the statue. - [2019 Recap](https://kierstenlillis.com/2019-recap/): It has been quite the year! For me, this came in the form of peer reviews and constructive criticism. - [Writing Routine, Interrupted](https://kierstenlillis.com/writing-routine-interrupted/): Every morning at 8:30 am, like clockwork, I opened my WIP chapter doc, silenced my phone, and got to work. - [My Top 5 Writing Blogs to Follow](https://kierstenlillis.com/5-writing-blogs-follow/): Amen, Ray!
