Craft Resource: Susan Dennard’s Website

My fourth post of each month is going to be reserved for craft discussions and craft resources that I personally use and love. This month, the first one, I am dedicating to Susan Dennard’s writing website www.susandennard.com.

Susan is the New York Times bestselling author of fantasy and sci-fi books including the Witchlands series (now being adapted for TV by the Jim Henson company), the Something Strange and Deadly Series, and more.

Sooz (as she calls herself in her bio) maintains a site chock full of amazing resources for writers covering a variety of topics. Specifically this time I want to shout-out her section On Revising, because I used her method when I first started wading through my first draft of the second Sezna Seer book. I’m still working through the edits, but Susan’s editing guide has already saved me So. Much. Time. I don’t even want to think about where in the process I’d be if I hadn’t followed her steps. If you participated in Nanowrimo this year, or if you just need help organizing your editing process, check out this guide. I’m certain it will help you sort through all the words you wrote and figure out what to do with them.

My scene cards with color-coded Post-it notes reminding me what changes need to be made to Plot, Character, Setting, and Other Problems.

Here are direct links to two more of Sooz’s articles I’ve found super useful, though you should definitely poke around her whole site because that thing is so valuable whether you’re looking for craft tips, how-to’s of publishing, editing, and more.

Goal, Motivation, Conflict

I also follow Susan on Twitter and receive her email newsletter (Misfits & Daydreamers), where she doles out wisdom and cookies beyond what’s available on her site. So, I guess you could say I’m a fan. Anyway, check out Sooz’s website, and let me know what nuggets you find helpful.

And while you’re at it, sign up for my newsletter, too, so you don’t miss out on new posts and writing updates.
